Literacy and Me

These alarming facts were published by the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation recently.

Poverty is a root cause of low literacy. Illiteracy causes increased education costs, higher crime rates, poorer overall health, higher rates of drop outs from high school, and higher rates of dependence on publicly subsidized programs.

70% of inmates in American prisons can not read at a 4th grade level.

Children who do not read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade have only a 1 in 8 chance of catching up and are 4 times more likely to drop out of school.

Texas ranks 50th in states whose adult population has a high School diploma.

In the United States, Houston ranks 56 out of 75 cities with the lowest levels of literacy.
