SUE MONK KIDD’S THE BOOK OF LONGINGS: Audiobook review

Kidd’s storytelling talent is showcased by reader Mozhan Marno in this 2020 publication. It deals with the “What-ifs.” What if Jesus had a wife? What if she were not Hebrew? What if she were ahead of her time and railing about the status of women in her day?
Kidd accomplishes an almost impossible task–focusing on her protagonist, Ana, instead of the secondary character, Jesus. In a nice twist, Judas (yes, that Judas) is Ana’s zealot adopted brother. The book is extremely well-researched, as most of Kidd’s novels are and considers the theme of “one woman’s struggle to realize the passion and potential inside her, while living in a time, place, and culture devised to silence her.” Ana has scholarly pursuits and secret narratives, her scrolls upon which she has written her deepest thoughts. Protecting them is a major part of Ana’s story.
